I have a blue tuxedo and longspine urchin(venomous sting) and they don't bother anything, not really sure how much of a dent they do on the glass though, they seem to stick to rocks and substrate! Every once in awhile they run on the glass for a bit.

But live aquaria has most of them listed as reef safe. i know the bigger pincushions are labeled as bull dozers though, so something to consider if your rock work isn't locked down.

I'd give it a try. Even if the worst situation happens urchins are obviously not difficult to catch and remove.

I had a long spine urchin that did a great job on my red turf algae problem for about six months and then suddenly decided to eat acans, superman montis and pocillopora. He tried zoas too but apparently didn't like them as much. I took him back to the LFS and now have a blue tuxedo urchin.

The tuxedo urchin does nothing with the red turf algae (except wear it) but he does eat the coralline off the back glass. I doubt a blue tuxedo urchin will eat enough coralline to avoid having to scrape it off the glass occasionally though.

Mag float. ;-). I've heard urchins actually make the coralline worse due to johnny appleseed effect.

Longspines do the best job, but get quite huge. If you don't have the space for one, a tuxedo will do pretty well also.
