i noticed that my blue tux urchin is wearing a patch of GHA. My tank has just gotten over the GHA phase and was wondering if he drops it, would it cause the algae to spread more?

P.s. sorry if this is in the wrong spot, not sure if i should put it in algae or inverts

you can always pick him up and clean him. if you are careful about it and don't squeeze he won't poke you. They can be removed from the water for a quick clean, it won't hurt him.

ok, i'm always picking him up off of things in the water, he loves to hang upside down on the screen door and loves to go on my skimmer, i don't want him on those so i just pick him up and put him on a rock. I have yet to take him out of the water to clean him, good idea though

I disagree, it is the same principal as fragging. Any little bits and pieces that settle somewhere new have the potential to start colonizing on the rock. You should try and find him some new camouflage, a patch of star polyps would look neat.

they can be a little high maintenance. if you cover them in shells though they are less prone to this.

Yea I've tried putting shells on him and he didn't accept. Only shells he seems to really like are the ceriths. I've given up about taking them off, I figure he'll eventually drop the little guys. I would love for him to try to pick up the crab, they were really close to each other last night :D

your tank was pretty much covered in GHA... I don't think it's possible for him to seed somewhere new ;)

If/when it drops a piece it's more likely to get picked up by your filtration than if it was still growing as well as you have a CuC other than the urchin working in tandem that will eat at the smaller pieces it leaves behind.

You will be fine. Don't worry about it IMO.
