When I first started my tank I got a wet/dry filtering system. Since then I have removed the bio-balls and just use is as a sump.
The overflow goes down into the sump but first passes through the floss media in the sump. It is actually a pad, blue on one side and white on the other. I cut it to fit.

Anyway do you think I should do away with this pad? I do rinse it out every 2 days and replace it every 2 weeks. When I rinse it there is a lot of brown-like material that comes out. I can't get it perfectly clean so it is still a little brown in the center.

    Thanks for the help...

Your schedule is good for cleaning, I see nothing wrong with it.

    +1 on above

I like to run some form of mechanical filtration to remove debris
and as your cleaning it regularly I think yours is a good method

i use the same stuff in my sump replace it every 2 weeks along with changeing out the carbon but i change out the gfo pellets once a month here is a pic how i put it to use .. mind that the water level in the return chamber is a little high in the pic its normaly out of the water by about 1/2" i like thats its cut to fit makes designing something arroud it easy i like the idea of filtering after the skimmer filter socks work well too but to me it just keeps debris in the water column
