I would just slow it down, vinegar bath it for a while tomorrow, rinse it and get it running in some salt and see how it goes. I bet its working decent, and really anything on the skimmer can be replaced for pretty cheap so you'll be set;)

    Skimmers don't work in freshwater.
Soak at least the venturi section in distilled white vinegar to clear the intake tube of any calcium buildup and it should work fine once you stick it in saltwater.

One more question, I cleaned the skimmer all up and installed the o-ring that bad been missing around the main chamber which I had temp sealed with silicone. There is some leakage around that surface still, will this cause a large performance problem? If so would sealing with silicone be a ok quick fix. Ge type 1wd

I use a little dab of food grade silicone grease on all my O rings. You can get it at any Lowes, HD or homebrewing supply store.

Sounds like a plan to me, normally i would pet it up (petroleum jelly) but i dont think that would go over well with fish related things.

Most silicone greases are food grade and safe to use.
