I know most of you would suggest against crushed coral, but I'm choosing to go with it.

    I'm a first time saltwater tank owner. I have a 90 gallon, with a 20 gallon eshopp bio-ball sump.

I wanted to know what your thoughts were about buying USED crushed coral? and how should I prep it before putting it in the tank? just rinse well with water? Or would you not go with used?

    Thanks

I would not use it unless you knew the history of it, who tank did it come from for one and if you do use it I would bleach it if it is still wet and let it dry out real good and recure it all over again. easier to buy new IMO.

I use crushed coral in both of my DT's.
If it's used, then I suggest you get the history on it.
Did the owner use any copper in the tank?
Like the others said, I'd just use some bleach in it.
And it would also be a lot easier to buy it new.

I would never go with a used substrate of any sort. Aragonite spends all of it's time absorbing phosphate. If it was in someone elses tang that was really trashed, then it's going to be loaded with nasties just waiting to be leached out into nice clean water. The CC in question could do this with the build up of sulfer pockets, cloudy water, or an algae bloom like there's no tomorrow. Why not buy a 100 dollars worth of sand and call it good. Ur going to spend that much money on a couple to 3 fish anyway so why not go about it the right way. This is coming from a guy who ran CC back in the day and has since made the transition.
