    Hi,

I just recently bought a used second tank, figured, better the discount the faster I get this tank up and running but it is a mess. I understand that bleach is a good solution to cleaning a grimy tank, my understanding is when bleach drys the end result is basic salt. Using a 1/10 bleach to water solution is the correct parameters.

My question: Before I assume too much, bleach is just bleach correct, generally additives are not added to bleach correct?

I would use vinegar. Then rinse and you're done

For sure that is another option.

+1 on vinegar, Since you've already bleached the tank, I would go back and mix a batch of vinegar and water, and scrub it again that way there is no residue of bleach left in the tank. JMO. Good luck.

I always just use vinegar as well, works great! and won't harm anything.

I've done it both ways, bleach and vinegar (separate tanks).

I used bleach on my last tank cleaning and the coralline/GSP/salt residue that was stuck to the glass came off without much problem.

For those with an opinion on one being better than the other in context of cleaning an old tank, why is that?

(I have no opinion on that (yet)).

i actually have used both on the same tank(my current sump). used bleach first to clean/sterilize then used vinegar to ensure bleach was neutralized. vinegar is generally sufficient and won't case as much damage if residue is left so i would suggest that unless you are really worried about the pathogens that the tank may contain.
