If I was to use a eheim 2217 for a saltwater set up that is just live rock and non reef safe fish, what would some benefits that a canister filter would bring to the set up? and what kind of media would i be putting in the canister or just have it with no media and let it act as a flow? please let me know the benefits or possibly the negative effects it would have, thanks

If you add sponge and carbon...i would change those every two weeks. Some sort of biological media could help in there.

Or you could do this experiemnt i've always wanted to do....instert a small waterproof light in there and fill the canister with chaeto and see what happens :)
