Very good point and wise decision also, how old are the boy's, if they are kind of dare devils they could also try to go swimming in it head first, that I pray in the good Lord's name never happen to anyone! I have a 2 yr old that one day i found evidence of playing in the water standing on a chair....ouch!

The only reason I keep my glass top on is that I read that wrasses can be jumpers and I'd rather not take that chance than have it wide open. If I ever run into a problem down the road, I'll switch to covering half the tank with egg crate. But I've had not one problem yet. I think the better the skimming you are doing, the more you are removing the waste that pollutes the water, before it builds up so much that it forms to a gas within the tank and can't get out due to the glass lids. If I'm wrong someone please correct me, but I think that the primary reason toxic gases could build up under glass lids is due to lack of necessary skimming of excess nutrients from the water that would otherwise rot in your tank and foul the air.

thanks for the responses, aside from the salt spray on the furniture issue,{my "financial advisor"doesn't like it...things are best when she'shappy;)}i don't mind topping off every night, but the swing {1.024 to 1.0255ish}doesn't seem healthy for the residents to me.temp is staying just above 79 to just below 79 with the cover, then there is the light blocking issue, these are easier to clean then the bulbs atleast, gas xchange however has me worried,i have an extra air pump maybe i'll add an airstone and further pollute the nice clean glass:eek:

I use small lids on the front half of the tank too keep my toddler from throwing things in the tank but the rest of the tank is opened I do have my light fixture on legs on the tank however so a fish probably couldn't jump out it would bump into the light before it made its way out I hope.

in her defense she's been very supportive of all my aquatic endeavors, this is my first reef and i've spent much much more on it than any previous setup, i can tell she's about to get "fiscally responsible" on my a$$, luckily i'm past the big upfront investment though::)

well,i have half the covers on now to keep the spray from coming out the front and made a topoff thingy with a gallon jug and some airline tubing with a little valve at the end, dripping about 1 drop a second,,we'll see how it goes
