using nitrate stones (should they be replaced)

    hi all googled it no answers, i am just setting up a new reef tank given to me by a friend, its an 80 gal and it came with an external filter, i have thrown pretty much all the media away other than the nitrate stones, can i re use this or just put it in the garden around the plants and replace it.....??

    If you have around 80lbs of live rock in it then you should be able to get rid of the nitrate stones. The live rock should do the work. It would be best to remove the stones at the rate of about 1/4 of the original amount every week.
