I was using Red Sea Coral Pro Salt for over six months and than decided to switch to Tropic Marine Pro Reef. I know that certain salts are higher in calcium, while others have better Alkalinity and Magnesium. Would it make since to alternate salt mixes every time you do a water change? I mean i am always going to need salt so i dont mind spending the money on having two big buckets of it. Has anyone else done this before?

I have a bit of Oceanic left over, and use that every once in a while instead of the Tropic Marin.

There's no real reason to alternate, though. the alternation could actually be bad, as corals may be used the the chemistry of one vs another.

If you have any significant amount of hard corals, you will need to supplement anyways. Alternating shouldn't negatively affect anything, but I don't see any benefit to it either.

Consistency and stability is what your tank needs. I'd find a quality brand that you like and stick with it.

As a newbie I was taught to rotate brands of salt at every water change and have always done just that. I always have at least 4 different brands around and use a new salt at each w/c. The reasoning behind this is that each brand has a formula that differs from the others and is higher or lower percentages of elements than the others. It works well and was some of the best advice I heard.

ok, so it seems like there are mixed reviews on the subject? What types of salt mixes do you keep on hand reefmonkey?

I just mix the two together when I change brands. I see no real issue unless you are making a substantial change.

My thought would be if you are only doing like 5 or 10% water changes the different salt blends aren't going to effect anything that much. It wouldn't be any more harmful then dosing anything...by that I mean its only going to raise anything very slightly.
