What are you TDS's for incoming water before the ro/di??? If it is high then you will be replacing filters sooner then most.

That is quite a bit of light. The standard (which really means nothing....since there are so many other variables) is about 5W per gallon. I have seen this much used by others.....but it is a little much. Are you using PCs, T5s or MH?

283 isn't that bad. I think 500 is the cutoff for drinkable water. You should be at zero after treatment. Even the machine (just RO) outside the store gives water at zero. One time it measured 3, but that's the highest I have seen out of that machine.

TDS of 10 is a contributing factor but I do not think the sole culprit. I hear this a lot, “water tests perfectly – but I still have hair algae” Often your water is not “perfect” it just tests that way because the production/addition of Nitrates and/or Phosphates are being consumed at the same rate. Change the RO/DI filters – and please check for phosphates if you have not already done so. Actually, can you please post what you tested and the results?

I’d be looking for Nitrates and Phosphates – and the potential causes in my opinion.

Kedron, Yes I agree with everyone that your RO/DI should be zero. I would try all the other filters before you replace the RO membrane (just so you can save some money if it's gets fixed by a different filter)

As for your H.A. I would suspect the Algae is feeding on Nitrates and Phosphates. The issues is your water will not have high readings of Nitrates and Phosphates because the algae is consuming it. I would follow the standard algae beating techniques such as, reduce feeding, make sure lighting is new, increase water changes and remove the HA by hand
