Hi again! In the past I've had horrible cyano/algae blooms. I'm setting up a completely new tank now & was contemplating getting a UV filter. Are they very effective against cyano bacteria? I'm also concerned about them filtering out too much. Do the UV filters kill the food that filter feeders like clams feed on? What about corals?

These are the ones I've been looking at. Does anybody have any experience with them they could share?

    Gamma UV Sterilizer
    Turbo Twist UV Sterilizer
    Aquamedic Compact UV Sterilizer
    JBJ Submariner

If you've had good experience with other brands/types please share that as well!

Also are the T5 Sterilzer lamps any better or worse than others? Finding information about the lamps themselves has been quite troublesome!

Raven I am not familiar with any of those. When I was new at this I put a lot of merit into the UV sterilizers for cyano and ick. I used them for years and continued to have problems with both from time to time.

What I think it did for me is give me a false sense of security and I slipped more often on maintenance. I toook it out 6 years ago, still have it on a shelf, and have not had a problem with either. Keep in mind that it will raise your temperature too.

I have one that is on hold 99% of the time. I have only run it when there is a problem.

Only thing I may see them good for is to cut down on some of the chemical warfare thats in the water. Other than that they are of little help. Ich is not really free flowing in the water column so it does now go threw the UV. Algae spreads from a source and then re anchors or has such a fast reproductive cycle that not enough can be killed with UV. Then You have the problem that you are killing the bad stuff and the good stuff
