What are your thoughts on UV sanitizer in a mixed reef? I just got a new bulb for my 8w sanitizer. I am getting allot of green algae on my glass. I hope that the new bulb will help. Not sure if 8w is enough light.

    thanks

8w is very low. I was always under the impression you need at least 15 watts at a flow of like 55gph to effectively prevent algae growth however you really should find the underlying cause of the algae growth.

I don't think it would work.

The better idea, regardless as to whether it will work or not, is to work on your nutrient issues. Run GFO, use a refugium, maybe a denitrator if necessary.

I know that it's small. It was on my 52. Finding the problem? I have a refugium, a phosphate reactor with PhosBan media. Just installed a 1/4 hp chiller to bring the temp down from 83.5 to 78. Water is RO/DI. I will be installing a Bubble Magus BM160 when I transfer from my 90gal to a new 150. THere is a CPR Back-Pack on the tank now. I hope to have the new tank in place next week.

I have the CPR Backpack that is a small skimmer The BM160 will be installed on the 150. I will be doing a 20% water change in the morning. Then painting the back of the 150 and start setting it up.

did the uv you purchased have a recommended size pump for it? mine had pump size recommendations for ponds... fish only and one for reef tanks.
i also use chemi-pure elite in my sump. i feel it keeps water quality high. since i have a overstocked tank.

Boy :0 boy. What a difference. My water is clearer the green algae on my glass is turning brown and where I scraped it clean it isn't growing back.

I am using PhosBan in a Kent Marine Reactor. Activated Charcoal in a empty canister filter that I use for my chiller circulation.

Here is the Pump recommendations for the 40w UV sanitizer. This is what I purchased with it.

    Single 40W UV Fixture
    1 - 40W UV Bulb
Outlets: 1" Female Threaded or 2" Slip
    Tank Size: Up To 300G

Flow Rates (in gallons per hour):
Control Bacteria and Algae: 940 GPH
    Control Ick: 300 GPH

    Rio 1400 UL Submersible Pump

    GPH - 420
    Max Head - 6.5 feet
