I have a smaller 15W Aqua UV Sterilizer which is rated only up to 75gallons for Marine usage, making it simply inadequate for my 180g tank. What are people's opinion on using it for a QT tank though, as it is supposed to help kill the bacterias and parasites commonly found in newly bought fish? I'm hoping that I can use this instead of meds the QT.

I recently posted a message about UV sterilizer power required to kill ich. Basically you'd need probably six times what you've got now to have a meaningful effect on ich.

i would use it in conjunction with meds but not instead of, depending on the situation of course. if you are just q/t the healthy fish to make sure they have nothing im sure it is fine but if you get a sick fish w/ parasites or something you are going to need to medicate the uv sterilizer will not kill off the parasites on the fish just in the water column

I would run the under sized on your main tank. The world of UV sterilizers is highly controversial as to what they kill what the wont and the people that are against them think that they just kill to many beneficial things in your water column. If you run an under powered crystal for your setup you will just get cleaner water with less debris I know this isnt what you were asking I just wantedc to throw that out there and maybe you could let us know the results. Enjoy

as for the ich problem I would just QT the fish and keep it happy thats all I have ever done and it works out just fine, you can use garlic addatives. i personally wont use ich removers just "seems" unnatural.

Interesting...I thought that with lower flow rates, you could still having a meaningful effect on ich with lower powered UVSs?
