UV sterilizer

I always thought they were overkill until some kind of bacterial bloom hit my tank. It went away and then came back and eventually my water turned murky and my tank looked like a swamp. I tried everything, but it didn't get cleared up until I added the UV.

Been running it ever since. I also have one way larger than what is needed for my tank and have seen no ill effects from it.

They are supposed to kill some parasites as well.

I have an 18W CL turbo twist, rated to 250g- (don't you just love the inflated ratings?) on my 125g. I've got a maxijet 600 pushing about 200gph thru it. It comes from the skimmer portion of my sump, and empties back to the chaeto basket- to the return.

I did install a 36w UV it setting right after returning pump before chiller, how long do I need it keep on for 150gal tank? I afraid to run it 24/7 looks like it can burn everythink.

 

normally uv's are run 24/7 i run mine 24/7

Edit ** Oopps, just noticed my UV bulb burned out, only about 9 months old.
I"ll either replace it or get a Ebay one that's bigger and much less $$.

 

I seem result on 3d day after run, water more clearer and anymals moves more happy, can see now how microbulb of air moves across the tank, hope it gonna prevent ick too
