It's a good thing, it kills anything that goes into it (algae or bacteria)

here is some reading that might help you decide. it also talks about some of the myths . i think it explains uv well
UV Sterilization, Irradiation for Aquariums/Ponds; UVC Sterilizers Information

i believe if i didnt have a uv on my tank the fish that took a leap out of the tank. only to find it taking a trip into the back yard in the cats mouth. would have died. the cat left a puncture wound on both sides of my male anthia, from his teeth. i caught the cat got the fish and put him back into the water, i truely believe if i didnt have a uv hooked up that fish would have died from a bacterial infection.

Yea, a UV is never a bad thing to add! It can even kill free floating parasites.

"Can" being the operative word. The UV dosage necessary to do this is excessive and well beyond the standard aquarium application.

i bought mine used on ebay dirt cheap. than bought a new bulb for it since i didnt know how old the bulb that was in it was. some seem to have longer bulb life than others so thats also something to check into when searching for one.
