I think diatoms has a lot to do with water quality and the silica that is in the water used to fill a tank. I notice them when my filters need to be change on the ro/di system.

I've always used ocean water instead of mixing with the nasty tap water. Florida is easy to get salt water reasonable coupled with live oolite sand and Florida aquacultured rock helps out a lot. I just had an 80 gal waterchange delivered for $80 and it took maybe a half hour's time. Can't beat that!

Vegas, I wanted to let you know that Ive spent all morning reading your thread and you build looks great... I'm envious of the new tank and makes me want to buy my own house and start a new build... I think you should swap out those RO/DI filters... Make sure you kept in mind the amount of waste water that was partial clean... The silicats were probably from the new trash cans and from startup... Have you check the quality of your RO/DI output?

Great work man, and I wish you the best...

    Whisky Tango Foxtrot,

I did just change the filters this week after finding out I waited too long to get it done. Everything is back on track. Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks it is a sea squirt. I have been told they are hard to keep. I've had him for about a week with no problems. I've got some good reefers in Vegas that give me good advise on feeding the crazy things I buy.

Is the sea squirt a sponge I wonder? Did the LFS say to keep it on the bottom?

Nothing like a sponge from what I know. It takes food in one of the holes and lets the waste out the other hole. It looks lime it has some type of stomach.
