    Refugium / Sump build

I know the skimmer looks tight in the picture and you are right. With the way the stand is built and using two tanks I think this is the best way I could set it up. Reason being the support studs under the tank and above the skimmer. Along with having to raise the fuge tank made it a bit tricky but I am happy with the out come. I will be using an external collection cup for the skimmer to eliminate having to take the collection cup off a lot. This setup can be changed a bit so let me know if you see something that needs to be changed. If I did not have small kids I would have built the stand an extra foot taller to make the fuge and sump fit better but I want them to be able to enjoy it too!

Score I got 100 pounds of rock today

I picked up a 100 pounds of rock today. Needs to be cleaned but another craigslist find. I know the lady who had it took care of it she is a member of a local reef club. But since it is dry I will nuke it anyways just to be safe.

If it's completely dried out as it looks to be, there's no need to bleach it. It probably doesn't even smell anymore, does it?

No smell just a lot of dead worms and other life forms. You think I should just wash it off? maybe a light scrub and call it a day.

The nice thing about this rock is it is mostly larger pieces with lots of options for caves and corals.

I picked up some rock like that. It looked much nicer after I bleached. Took some time, but I figure it was easier to be safe and bleach and rinse and dry than to pop in the tank and get some sort of weird problem from bad bacteria left in the rock.

Rinsed, scrubbed thoroughly, bleached, rinsed in RO water, dried several days, rinsed and soaked in saltwater, then added to tank. Everything good.

Good luck with the rock, good find.

I woke up and went into the garage today after rinsing off the rock last night. It had that nasty dead body die off smell. So I am going to bleach it just to be on the safe side. I figure it wont hurt and I have time since I'm still weeks away from putting water in.

I don't know if I would go through the effort of bleaching it. If you are that worried about it, boil it, then rinse, then dry. There is nothing left alive to worry about in it, there will just be a spike from whats dead. Since its being added to a new tank that has to cycle anyways, that's not even really a problem ;)

I drilled all the holes in the tank for the bulkheads. I put the four closed loop lines in the back wall along with the two return lines next to the top of the overflow. I have not put the four lines into the bottom of the tank yet since I have to still move everything into another room where it will be setup at. I don't want the bulkheads to break during the move.

The picture is not the best with the glare but you will get the point. This is of the left side of the tank the right is a mirror image of the left.

Holes on the bottom of the tank. THere are four going across I just could not get them all in a picture.

I just purchased my pumps. ;D

    1) Reeflo black fin 3600 to run the closed loop

    2) Reeflo black fin 6000 to run the sump and a manifold for the protein skimmer and future add-ons.

Here is the link in the event you want to look at the pumps. ReeFlo Pumps

Now I need to convince my wife to let me buy the O/M 8-way from Tangster and I will be able to put the water in!!!!!!:trampolin
