Right now my friend has taken my dog, Otis to be put to sleep. I have always been strong enough to take my animals to be put down but this time I wasnt! I am sitting here right now crying...

Otis had what was thought to be epilepsy. Now we are not sure that he did not have a brain tumor. The vet said it was a possibility. He was always a very loving dog...wouldnt hurt a flea. However his temperment changed drastically. He was going after my other animals, actually going for the throat. He would loose control and would bite whatever and whoever he could. He bit a human. He was breathing funny, pacing, growling etc. His eyes were wild..and I was afraid he was going to hurt something or someone! He wouldnt sleep as he kept pacing and barking and growling. Tonight I took him for a long walk today and brought him to my mothers house. She could not believe the way he was...she told me he had to be put down.

I called several dog behaviorist and trainers and was actually told there was nothing that could be done. I had Otis at the vet yesterday and he said he might need to be put down. The vet said it was a probability that he had a brain tumor...as pugs have a higher risk of developing them.

I just feel like I let him down...I could not risk someone getting hurt and I believe that he would hurt something. Anyway just needed to vent....

Monday I lost Bob the mantis...which was hard enough but this is horrible!

Anyway thanks for listening...I know right now he is being put to sleep and pray he goes down easily and doesnt suffer!

Every painful step you exert on the uphills of life is a down payment for future ease and coasting down the hill. Just keep on trucking, and things will reverse to better memories eventually. :)

No matter what animal a pet is, they become a part of our family. It really flat out sucks that you have lossed two family members in such a short space of time :( We're with you and praying for you though. Keep your chin up.

I know slightly how you feel. The dog I grew up with was put to sleep when I was 10. I had my little parakeet, that I paid for out of my little pocket, and he was put to sleep later in his life when I was I guess 14-16. And then there are the countless other animals (well, they are countable, but it's alot) that I've had die of natural causes as well. Hang in there.

I feel for you! I had to put my 13 year old lab down a few months ago, and it really stunk. Have no problems admitting this 235lb guy cried like a 7lb infant! And I have 3 more dogs at home currently with cancer. They are every part of my family that people are.

So sorry for the losses...I know it's hard to believe that we've done all we could to keep our pets happy and well adjusted, but I'm sure Otis had an awesome loving environment during his time with you.

Ya that sucks. A couple of years ago I had to put the wifes Rottie down. Best damn dog I ever met. In fact we got married because Angel took to me the moment she met me. She never liked any of the men she went out with. ;D It was pretty hard. We have two beautiful knuckle heads right now. They are family like every other dog I have ever had. We still miss Angel. What can you do?

You didn't let your dog down though. Angel started getting grumpy and snappy the older she got. She had really bad arthritis. We were worried about her too in the end. Finally her knee went out and she could not get up. You provided a great and responsible life to your dog. You are a good owner. We didn't want to put ours down, but we knew it was right about a week later. Hang in there.

Very sorry to hear this Schackmel.

I know how you feel, I recently had to put down my 11 y/o golden retriever because it had cancer and could not get up. Then shortly afterwards I had to put down my brand new kitten after spending $400 on shots. I didn't have that kitten long but we really bonded, I still get teary eyed when I think about him, he was so young and full of energy (he was half feral cat so he had a big wild side) then the next day he was leaning against the glass door and wouldn't move. When I took him to the vet they said he had an infection of the lungs and they filled with fluid, wild cats often get it. They said the lungs can be drained but they are so badly damaged the kitten will likely suffocate.

Don't know if that helped or not. I kind of got side tracked.

Sorry about your lose Mel. It is terrible losing a pet but you gave them a great life and you still have many happy memories of them that will live on.

Schackmel, I feel terrible for the week you've had! It's a terrible decision to make, the choice to put a pet down, but it sounds like you did the right thing. As Jwin already mentioned, we had to put our 16-1/2 year old dog down a few years ago. He was our first "baby" - we got him as a puppy about 6 months after getting married. His quality of life had been going down and I just knew it was time. Made a spectacle of myself at the vet.....heck, I'm tearing up just typing about it! Anyway, the vet said these pets we have will fight until the bitter end (like Bob). He said you can spend a long time waiting for them to die, and it just doesn't always happen like that. They can be in pain and just not show it. He said we have to trust our instincts. You'll feel better over time, and even be able to look at the pictures of Otis and smile. It takes a long time. I cried the whole day over Jwin's parakeet, just knowing he was going to walk in the door from school and I was going to have to tell him. We've had countless "funerals" for everthing from fish to birds to guinea pigs to hamsters to dogs, but I have no regrets at all over having those pets and the joy they've brought. Take care of yourself. I'm very sorry. :(
