Is the lion fish still in the tank? I ask because, sometimes it is hard to balance keeping corals happy and keeping a lionfish feed. Anything that can fit in the lionfishes mouth he will eat, all smaller fish.

Do you have a type of system you are driving to ?

    Mixed reef with corals.
    Fish dominated.
    Soft coral tank.

That way next time the LFS wants to add something to the tank you will be able consider if you really want it or need it.

Welcome to 3reef and what a great looking reef aquarium! The orange thing with the tentacles, I'd say if it's in a shell, it's a scallop. If it is an anemone, I'd tell the LFS worker to take it back and get a refund. Yourtank probably isn't old enough., even with all of the fancy tech. And you should stand up for yourself! Go to the LFS and pick out your own fish and coral. For my tank, it's maintained by a LFS owner every motnth, and he is kind enough to give me huge discounts. :) next time he's over, ask him for a lesson on how to syphon, control the temp and water flow, etc... That way, he should be able to come less often and you could get to learn something by yourself. :D

    No not really

Mixed reef has soft corals, lps corals and sps.

Soft coral tanks may have corals like mushrooms, xenia, leathers, colt, zoanthids..... This type of tank would probably be fine without all the dosing of trace elements and the lighting requirements are different.

A tank dominated by stoney corals, like acropora and other sps and clams will probably require routine dosing, pristine water parameters and intense lighting.

Fish only tanks do not need the dosing, not the intense lighting.

It will probably make more sense after you looks at tanks for awhile. For instance, member grinder has the same type tank as me, but his tank features mostly soft and lps corals, while my tank has mostly sps and a few lps. Same make of tank but mine requires very intense lighting and grinder can use pc lighting secondary to the type of corals he is keeping.

Oh I hadn't even thought of the fact that he could be talking about a scallop. Good call. I really want one of these. They are pretty neat.

    True..it could also be a nem(a.k.a. anemone).

LPS = large polyp stony coral
SPS = small polyp stony coral

both have a hard skeleton while soft corals have a softer skeleton.

Yes, right now you have a mixed reef. That is fine, but what do *you* want? It is your tank...make what you want of it; not what the other guy wants.
