About a month ago I started a thread about my hermit crabs being violent and attacking my snails. I was told to leave the empty shells in and the attacks should stop. Well I'm pretty sure the crabs are just gunnin' for the snails now.

I got ten astrea and ten nerite snails about two weeks ago and I'm prolly down to two or three of each. There are even crabs in snail shells but they keep going after them! Any other suggestions?

What do you feed your hermits?

    Well, besides snails LOL.

Hahaha. Well they pick it the algae on the rock and I see em eating the food that the fish miss. I guess I didn't realize you had to specifically feed them. I thought they relied on scraps

They do rely on scraps, unless they aren't getting enough scraps. If they are hungry they will definitely kill each other and snails.

What kind of hermits are they? Some are naturally more aggressive than others. I have red scarlet hermits in two tanks, for 2 years in one tank and a year and half in the other, and they've never killed each other or a snail.

Back in October I believe I got ten blue legged and five scarlet red. Since then I've picked out some corpses so I'm not exactly sure how many are in there now. I know they're just snails but at this rate I'll be buying snails regularly

Well one astrea snails are hermit favorite. They get upside down and uh oh crab food. Nerite snails also a favorite. I got all types of snails are those are the only ones my hermits ate. All others with me are ok hermits dont seem to bother them. Shells do help though. Blue legs seem to be the worst on snails too. Scarlet or red legs hermits seem to be the least to attack snails.

I've actually never lost a snail to a hermit in previous tanks. I might have lost one in this tank, but I can't prove it since I was out of town LOL.

I make sure there's plenty of scraps, and they still pick at the rocks and leave the snails alone. I have a mix of hermits: blue-legs, red-legs (not scarlets), and others I have no idea what they are but are comparable in size.

You might want to count yours, those "bodies" might have just been molts.

Would you stay in a locked room with dogs and only feed them crumbs?
Do you think you'd last very long if you did? LOL

Put the crabs in the sump and the snails in the display. Snails are generally more effective anyway.
