So is anyone here that has a Vortech power head using the foam filter ring over the outside of it?

It seems I clean it just about every day. The ring on mine stays clean for about 20 minutes then get crusted with gunk.

I don't have an anemone in the tank, and I feel the fish are capable of not getting sucked in, so is it really necessary? I see the Koralias and other PH's run with just the plastic guard, no foam, so my first thought is to take it off... any reason not to?

Thanks in advance for the help!

If you don't have an anemone I personally wouldn't use it. The fish in my tank are fine and have no problem not getting sucked, in. Even my little neon goby does fine, although I do have the powerhead cranked down a ways because it's just on a 30 gallon. :)

If your fish can't swim against that current they probably aren't healthy I don't think. There is no way the current from a vortech matches an ocean current so I can't imagine how it would be a problem.

I have two MP40W's in my 120 and I don't use the foam rings either. Nitrate traps in my opinion! :)
