Hi...I am thinking about these powerheads a little lately and may grab a used MP 20.

I think I just bought a original MP40W driver for real cheap. Is it true you can use them to upgrade your MP20W to an MP40W?

I know nothing about these Vortechs except that everyone loves them and wants them and they kick butt...so I want one;D

So if I get a MP20 ...all I have to do is change the part I am buying...the MP40w driver and I am good to go...I have a MP40 basically?

If I am missing something please let me know....also if there is any info on these I should be aware of please tell me...Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the MP20 and MP40 are the same, except for the driver. That's the impression I got when I read up on them.

yea...i think so too....so that is why when you upgrade the MP20 driver to the MP40 driver....the MP20 becomes an MP40.

    I think thats correct.

yep, you upgrade the driver to the mp40 driver and you have an mp40. I think the driver costs about $160 thought.

Used drivers are every where these day for around 45-55 dollar. The only catch is that you will have to buy the power supply.

You are correct in your thinking. It is extremely simple. A couple of screws open the case. Unhook the cable from the 20 controller, then connect it to the 40 controller. Extremely easy.

Cool....I did find a used driver for $45 so its worth it to me.

So wait one minute though....Cant I use the same power supply that is on the MP20 already? I thought all I need to do is change the board(driver) and I'm good to go.

Anyone know anything about the power supply needing to be changed too?

On the Ecotech website, the power supply for the MP40 is listed as a separate item. Given the difference in power between the MP20 and the MP40, it makes sense that the supply would be different.

    They are listed for $50.

There's a instructional video on the VorTech website that shows you how to accomplish the upgrade (ecotechmarine.com).
