If you can afford them get vortechs. Resale value, space, functionality, craftsmanship, etc. If you cant, koralias will do just fine...

Vortech's also have a prop-style impeller, but the dry sides run on DC. Koralias are an AC pump; hence prone to reversal.

it will be a heavy sps tank

so a 5ft tank can have just 1 mp40 and sustain water flow thats suitable for the entire tank ?
    i assumed you needed two

and ive been checking around for used vortechs just not a common find

MP40's max out right at 4 feet. I would suggest a combination of powerheads in your situation. A MP40 on one end and either 1 or 2 Koralias on the other.

I would put a koralia 4 on each end pointing at each other and 2 koralia 4's on the back of the tank pointing in opposite directions.

I think I might take the mp40 dive. Have the fiancé throw up half as my xmas gift and ill kick in the rest. After several discussions about it with fellow reefers, the person on the first page of this post finally convinced me. I always just considered the push of the power head, not the pull. The area that an MP can pull from convinced me to jump in.

I own a Biocube 29g that's pushin 1.5 years now. I originally put a Korallia Ph in there and it was too much flow in one direction. So I purchased the JBJ Oceanstream, which one ph broke, JBJ replaced free of charge. But it was still not doing what I wanted in my Biocube, plus it took up so much space. I eventually picked up an MP10 Vortech powerhead. It has cleared up all dead spots. I have sugar sized sand in my tank and it does not blow it all over the place unlike the other powerheads. There are so many settings plus you can create your own flow setting. The fact that it mixes up flow is really great for the corals, and like previous posters have mentioned...it sucks in so much water creating an amazing undertow even when set on low flow settings. I spent more money on regular powerheads trying to achieve what the Vortech MP10 did perfectly and more. Definitely invest in these for your tank. Someone mentioned they picked up two MP40's for $500 bucks, go that route. You can put one on each side of the tank and they will coordinate with each other and create perfect flow conditions.

Vortechs are more like the Rolls Royce of power heads.

Agree w the above, only 2 for 500 is not the standard. I think he/she had a mask on during that deal. They are like iBooks, they hold their value so used ones are usually like 60 or so below retail from what I see.

I have 2 mp40's in my 6 foot tank and although I do think all the modes are a gimmick since I only used one mode ever the best feature is how little space they take up in the tank, it is nice not to look at ugly powerheads everywhere and to me the cost is worth it just for that. You don't realize how ugly powerheads are until they're not in your tank anymore. The undertow they create is great also because it keeps my sand bed totally clear of anything and I never have to vacuum it despite not having a clean up crew either.
