I got a Ista Vortex Water Flow Accelerator and was going to drill the back of my tank for a bulkhead.

Issue I am having is I think it will probably have to have it deep to not suck air. I don't know how deep it needs to be to not suck air. I haven't found how far they need to be to not suck air. I don't want half my tank draining into my sump.

I haven't found much info on them other than their praises. Maybe I am over thinking this whole thing?

    This is for your return?
That would all depend on the pump you are using. the stronger the pump the more pull the unit will have with the surrounding water.
You may want to just use some PVC and go over the top of the tank as a test then when you are sure of where you want it. Then drill the tank.

    Dooh, for late night posting.

    Yes, it's a 3/4" return.

I was also thinking with a 20g sump and a 40gal tank I could probably have it 1/4 down the tank and only loose 10g into the sump and be fine.

Drill a couple of 3/16" anti-siphon holes 1/4" below surface level. This should make it easier on the mind in a power outage.
