a 75 is not more narrow though. its just not as tall. and I think 8 inches is a pretty big amount for someone to think that it is close enough to being 4 feet

Although I admire the bristletooth tangs being commented for use, This one i suggest against, Its expensive and one of the larger ones. People often want it for its beautiful juvie stage, but not the adult. Where As I wanted the adult!. My 1" Chevron almost a year and half later is about 5" big. If that gives you a grasp on the 12" max fishes growth rate.

I am confident you would not apply that logic tattoedsoul

I posted that more for the benefit of others who read these threads and do apply that type of logic to what they do with their saltwater tanks

we both know beginners see these tiny hippos and purchase them simply because they dont know the fishes growth potential or general guidelines on tank size

I absolutely agree that alot people will think that their tank is close enough to being the appropriate size for certain fish and end up with a tang in a 3 foot tank. I just think it also has alot to do with people buying fish when they are small and just assume that they can just take it back when it outgrows thier tank and add another small one

I was thinking about the tomini or the kole tang and my rock work is set up as two islands with plenty of swimming room and hiding places. Also to my knowledge the hippo could be in a 55 but that is just what I have read I'm not really sure, right now it is about 1.5'' - 2'' long so it should be ok and if I feel that he gets to big for the tank I will sell him. I also agree about the difference in the 75 to the 90 it has the same foot print but just a couple inches shallower, I would never put a tang in a tank less than 75. One more thing is that in my opinion you can have more than one tang in a 75 - 90 if both are happy and healthy, I see no problems with that.

I couldnt help you very much about compatability with other tangs, It seems like some do good together and some dont from what ive heard. but I think you will be happy with a tomini tang, mines a cool little fish to watch

The issue is, neither will be healthy for long due to competition for the same limited space.

If you buy fish that you know will outgrow your tank, then you have to be sure that when they do:
    1) You can catch them.
    2) Someone can provide a good home for them (not all LFSs will take a large fish back, as the demand for large fish is very low, and an LFS is not a good "home" for a larger fish).
    3) You're not going to be getting rid of a favorite pet. Kind of like getting rid of a puppy or kitten because it grew up.
