Can a sponge, or anything else, materialize when nothing except hermit crabs have been added to the tank? I've googled it, and I can't find any info on what this might be to save my life. I'm starting to suspect that it's the final resting place of the other Percula... maybe its body wasn't discovered. Tis a mystery!

i wouldnt advise taking the rock if it is a sponge as soon as it comes into contact with air it dies because air gets trapped in its pores. i would suggest taking a picture. you will also start to see different stuff appear on you live rock which is completley normal and fun to look for new stuff in your tank. If you get really lucky sometimes a baby coral stars growing on the rock

If it IS a sponge, then it's the most GROSS sponge I've ever seen. It really looks like a blob of thick jelly. I will photograph it, but it is really ugly. STILL, I concur that a living thing doesn't have to be pretty to be REALLY interesting, so hopefully you or someone else can help me identify it. Stay tuned for pics.
