As with all canister filters, keep a good maintenance regimen. They are considered nitrate producers. Mainly mechanical and chemical filtration if used correctly. Couldn't tell you about the particular brand though.

I have personally never run any sort of mechanical filtration on my own tank other than a skimmer so I really wouldn't be able to tell you anything other than make sure your filter pad is changed weekly

Ehiem - I have used a number of different cannister filters and always found Ehiem to be good quality / reliable

as above posts indicate, waste materials are collected and stored in this type of filter - so if you are doing weekly or fortnightly water changes - use the water you are going to discard to rinse the baskets in the filter - and the the inside of the filter itself .

If you are going to have a canister, Eheim is an awesome choice. I have had a couple over the years. They are silent and the quality of construction is top notch. I love the connectors.

I have the Eheim 2078 Canister and have to say its built solid and reliable. I had a Marineland C360 but returned it because the quality just wasn't there and it leaked. I don't have problems with high nitrates (10-20) but I have a FO tank though. It has 3 mech filters: EheimMech substrate, coarse pad filter and fine pad filter. I clean the coarse mechanical pad and replace the fine pad about every 3wks. The EheimMech gets cleaned about every 2months. The bio substrate stays pretty clean and I wash it down rarely (w/tank water). It has an electronic monitor which tells you when flow has been reduced, but I usually don't wait till then to clean the mech filters. Works for my app and so far am really happy with it.
