i see what you're saying though! you are buying that water, may as well use it! Besides housplants and gardens there has to be some other uses! like i said the toilet seems like a natural fit! just shut the water off and use this to flush!

Whatever you use the brine or waste for, make sure you follow your local plumbing codes and the UPC to prevent backsiphonage or backflows and possibly contaminating your water system. Never stick a hose down in a drain or bucket/sink. Always provide and air gap between the waste and the drain or exit point, since water cannot jump uphill there is no way you will get anything back in to the RO/DI system.

Ah back siphoning. Good point. A concept my simple brain just can’t seem to master. I can’t tell you how many times it has come back to bite me. First recollection was when I was setting up a 75G frag tank in our garage.

Our RODI unit was in the utility room since we used it for our display tank in the living room. I had the bright idea of running the output through the open window, across our deck, and into the garage window to fill the frag tank.

I spent most of 2 days filling the 75G tank. Late at night on the second day, it was about two inches from being full but I was ready for bed. I turned off the RODI valve and needed to close the utility room window. I disconnected the output hose and just dropped it out the window. Next morning I go to the garage and the tank is empty!

Oh no, I must have a leak. After searching 5 minutes to no avail, I can’t find the leak. No water on the garage floor. Stumped, I sit down to ponder just what the heck happened. The only conclusion I could reach was Alzheimer’s was getting an early start and I just imagined that I spent two days filling the tank. As I pondered life not knowing who or where I was and who was going to feed me, I hoped I would remember I don’t like peas then I spotted the small white RODI tube in the tank.

My eyes naturally followed it up out of the tank, across the room, and out the window. A eureka moment! I went outside to follow the hose further then spotted our wet deck. The deck so happened to be about two inches lower than the frag tank. The water had backed siphoned onto the deck wasting two days of water. As upset as I was wasting all that time, I sure am glad I don’t have to eat peas.
