I've had my tank setup for 3 weeks now but I bought it used that was setup for over a year. I've been checking my water multiple times per week and had recently been lowering my phosphates. Now everything looks good with a trace of phosphates. This algae seems to appear pretty quickly on the sand an on the glass. I have some nassarius snails and a sand star to turn over the sand and about 10 hermit crabs and a couple turbo snails too. What is this and how can I get rid of it?

I've been doing frequent small water changes lately. 5-10 gallons once a week since it is a new system but it seems to keep coming back. Will this eventually settle down? There is also 3 clownfish that I rescued in the tank that I feed small pellets to every day or so. Not too much, but enough to make them happy. Does pellet food contribute to this also?

since u moved the tank u upseted alot of the sand bed and this will raise the amonia and phosphates causing a algea bloom. but you can try to clean the sand using a gravel filter and see if it helps

What type of CUC is best for this? Snails, crabs? What kind?

Since it's only been running for 3 weeks and it was moved, that may cause it to go through a small cycle.

Check your parameters, Phosphate and nitrate specifically as this can greatly increase cyanobacteria.

some things you can do is lower the amount of time your lighting is on, water changes, feed your fish less, increase water flow to the area where the cyanobacteria is, and as for clean up crew i dont think their are a lot that eat cyanobacteria but i will check into that.

Ya I just looked and I don't see anything sufficient as for a cuc eating the cyanobacteria; you should not depend on the cuc to deal with this. Check your parameters and look at what I had wrote before. A moderator, or someone who knows more about cyanobacteria will eventually stumble upon this thread so be patient and everything will be okay ;D

Nothing to be worried about, its only been 3 weeks. The tank most likely went through a small cycle and things go out of whack. Check your nitrates, I would bet they are high. Ive had this algae forever and it comes and goes but nothing i really worry about. Also, no CUC that I have ever used has bothered with this algae... the way I control it is with good flow going over the sand from a K3 in my 100, just strong enough to not stir the sand.
