What's really high, and how are you cycling the tank?

If your ammonia gets really high and stays high... do a water change. The cycle can get stuck if the ammonia gets really high. My ammonia was at 8ppm for 2 weeks with no changes in nitrates or nitrites, did a 20% water change, and the cycle finished up in 2 days. A water change will not hurt anything at all.

8ppm on a api test. And this seems similar to what is happening to me, my nitrates and nitrites have been unchanged now for about 2 weeks, i used a couple fish to cycle it then took them out when i started reading ammonia

Do a WC and lower the ammonia level to under 5 PPM.

I've done both in the past and I've always found I've had problems down the road with the systems that I performed water changes during the cycle. Mainly algae issues
