its been a while since ive been on three reef....its good to be back...anyways i just got a 150gal setup and the tank was previously set up with fish and all so when i set it up it didnt go through a cycle stage so now the water is a little wacky with high nitrates so my question is this .....is there such a thing as too many water changes???????

    Hi,

    HI,
Ive read that the quality of your salt can be a source of problem.
Another is water quality, i work in a med lab and we have some very expensive water systems. and they are having a time with silica and other things.

Another concern is the plumbing in the water stores is there any copper pipes in the system.

I would consider a refuguim with a light for algae., I use DSB in my system with a small phos reactor.

i have an RODI set up for water quality and im using reef crystals salt and i have a phos reactor in the sump to reduce my algae outbreaks from phosphates. i didnt really think about leaving a light on in the sump to grow algae....ill give it a try

    How high are your nitrates?
I would say that their isn't such thing as too many water changes. Thought the risk increases as far as human error is concerned. Salinity, temperature variances etc. with performing additional water changes.

Well I actually did a water change Friday :) did 50 gallons in a 180 with 210 total gallons in all. I wanted to see all the magical things happen the people all say takes place larger polyp extension and yadda . Its the first water change I have performed on any system in over 25 yrs as I can recall .. I still see no difference other then my redox dropped out like a ton of Bricks and it now climbing back up wards. I saw a Photo someone had posted here from some aquarium God aka Expert and what they had was a bucket of new and old water side by side..

Well I did the same thing and in full sun and I could not see that much difference in what I had just taken from the tank and what I was putting into the tank..

My corals are now looking a little less tweaked and the slimeing has seemed to slowed up a tad on some of the acros. LOL maybe in a decade I'll do another :) But I do run a good grade of carbon and refugium and a nice skimmer ..And also a de nitrater coil and a PO'4 reactor and run Ferric Oxide in that so I have no Phosphates and or Nitrates to ever worry about.
