The rule of thumb is 15% every week, bi-weekly or month, depends on you. Luna

    Hi!
Hey first of all, I just want to inform you that Sargent Majors, though a pretty and interesting fish, are very aggresive and grow to about 4 inches in size or more! Believ me when I tell you this as I have two in my 125 gallon reef! They don't bother anything other than each other, but that is due to the fact that I have not added any fish since they were introduced. A 10 gallon tank is to small for that type of fish in my opinion, especially if you plan on adding other fish in the future!
Now, as for your water change issue, alot will depend on your livestock bioload, feeding regimine, filtration and so on.
I, personally like to perform a weekly water change. The reasons for this are a way to reduce the amount of dissolved carbon dioxide and nutrient levels, as well as to replenish traces and other valuable salts lost through respiration, adsorption, absorption and filtration.
I would do a gallon a week water change!!! By doing small weekly water changes, you are better apt of maintaining a stable and optimal water parameter level and you also decrease the chance of human error possibly altering your water parameters too much often associated with performing large water changes, in my opinion.

15% of 10g is 1.5 gals, so your doing more than needed, but I dont see a problem with it. Luna

Alot depends on your bioload, feeding habits and other factors. Unfortunately, their is really no concrete, etched in stone answer. Alot of it is trial and error and experimentation on your part. Algae growth, elevated nutrient levels, gelbstoff and other dissolved nutrient levels will enable you to further grasp your answer to that question. Test your water parameters on a fairly weekly basis and make sure your equipment is running optimally as well(cleaning etc.)!

Yeah, you could do that, but at 1 gal per week ratio. Instead of 3g per month, try 1g per week. I envy you my freind, 1g per week.........I wish.

ok i would do 1 gallon a week but i'm not mixing it

my lfs sells saltwater for $0.50 a gallon but my problem is i dont have a car and rely on mom and she would not take me there every week so could i buy 5 gallons and let it sit in a 5 gallon jug until i need a gallon then cap it for next week would it stay or would it go bad
