I have a question and need advise. I have recently added carbon to my filtration and it has done a wonderful job until now. Its been about a week since I added it and the water seems yellowish in tint. I do have a significant amout of diatoms/brown algea still on my rocks and notice that my white filter gets brown extremely fast now a days. What I do is replace the filter everyday and scrub the walls etc.

My water parameters are normal except for Phosphate which is .1 ppm I believe. Phosban has been added to system to bring this down

Has anyone used any type of water clarifier like Coralifes Marine Tank clarifier, etc? If so did it help or work?? Also is it okay to use with Carbon in the system or should I remove carbon?

Rather than adding clarifier it would be better to determine the source. It seems like things are happening fast in your system. How often are you feeding? How often do you do water changes? Are you using tap water? Do you have a TDS meter?

    EDIT -

Ah you have a new tank.

New tanks need to cycle and settle in. It sounds to me like you are having a war with algae that is common with new setups. I would let it go its course a bit. This can take weeks or longer sometimes so patience is key. You can clean the front glass, but I would leave the backwall (I always leave it myself for grazing for fish) for now and don't worry about the algae on the sand or rocks for a while.

I'd still like to know about your water and also what kind of lighting you have, etc.

Also what filter are you changing everyday? This may be messing with your tank a bit and it's biological filter.

I basically have 2 x 65w power compacts on a 54g corner unit. I add half a gallon of RO every other day. I have been swapping out the white filter strips from my ecosystem daily as it collects large amounts of brown gook. Yesterday I added fresh carbon to try and help water clarity so will monitor for now. Just seems like the tank has needed alot of mainenance lately.

My tank was setup back in November so its been around 3 months now that its cycled. I have done water changes 2 twice since then.

Ahh you have an ecosystem mud filter. That explains the brown tint. People seem to have good experiences with those and say their corals are happy, but that seems to be a known side effect. I'd just stay up on the floss and invest in good carbon. Cheap carbon runs out fast and may explain the phosphates as it can leach back into the system.

with a new tank your gonna go thru the alges just gonna have to suffer thru it. may take a few months brown diatom alge, green alge, red cyano, and maby a few others so dont panic its a normal thing. mine took at least 6 or 8 months before i started getting good alges. just do normal water changes change that carbon and maby a clean up crew of crabs and snails would help to

i agree on good carbon with matt the diamond brand is a good brand always worked well for me
