Hey guys, I'm in a tight space, an RO/DI system is kind of impractical. I'm sick of dealing with the algae as well. I was at the fish store and saw a DI filter that can go on the kitchen faucet for around $90.

    Are those things worth it?

No, not at all IMO, spend the extra 30-40 and get the ro system. the filters in those faucet ones with the amount of water u need it to filter are no where nears practical. you will be buying filters every couple of weeks.

Im in rochester ny, i use tap water on my 500+ gallon system with no problems. How old are your bulbs?

New York is a very unique place. Its waters are low in TDS naturally but on the flip side they have some of the highest sediment or particulate loadings in the US. I would not use it myself for sure. Spectrapure tells me they sell a ton of RO/DI units in New York state for just that reason.

I would never use any tap water in a reef aquarium period. We need to provide thebest environment for our critters and corals and that means a safe consistent water supply, RO/DI.

If you are on a budget something like the 75 GPD Premium from Buckeye Field Supply is an excellent value on a true reef quality system. If you have the $$ I personally use only Spectrapure products and find they more than pay for themselves over time. I look at an RO/DI like a fine tool so I invest well and it takes care of me for years and years.

The above link would be one of my last choices.

The Buckeye 75 is a better unit than the Typhoon and less expensive. look at all it comes with including micron sizes of the filters, remember large micron prefilters make carbon act as a secondary prefilter fouling or pluggging its pores and rendering it useless at adsorbing chlorine and VOCs.
