    How about to throw another spanner in the works....

    An MP10 or other vortech pumps cant be faced up or down :p

    This is not true :-/ It will actually help create turbulent and more random flow.

    I would say you should invest in a wavemaker. Even a Hydor Smartwave (new should be around $60 IIRC) will be fine and much better than nothing. I have 4 PH's in my tank and have two up near the top, rear corners, facing slightly down and towards the front glass. I have another one front right side, middle of the tank pointing straight, and one rear left again middle and pointing straight. The two near the top come on at the same time, and then the other two again come on the same time. I don't think I have any dead spots, so it seems to be working well!

    Do you have the option of creating surface agitation with your return flow?
