agent jones, i know you said RODI isnt a option but heres a option you may have not considered that my friend did. what he did was run a garden hose through his window, and simply hooked it up like that(as most RODI's have a garden hose hook up or one thats easy to adapt to). sure its a PITA to turn it on and off but it worked

Hi Agent jones - is the RODI not an option for physical or financial reasons - above posters are assuming physical and thus offered solutions based on that

if its financial - and you want to continue using tap water here is a short term options

when I was 1st starting up, many years ago, RODI was not an option for me either, so I used a 20 gallon bucket and in that I placed a power filter with 2 compartments that I filled with activated carbon, and also a poly filter (no idea if these are still around) it was/ is a chemical filter and takes out dissolved metals etc and changed colour indicating when it was time to change it

I ran this filter for 48 hours on the tap water in the bucket and then took the 2 chambers of the PH and out of the water prior to adding the salt mix and just mixed using the PH alone

not an ideal solution , everyone else will say - but as a short term method of purifying tap water for using in your reef, its a better option than just straight tap water IMO

    Thank you
the following comments are just me expressing my opinion - please do not be offended by my opinion!

Carbon lasts more than 1 use , he may have a spare filter already?
he may not have 130 usd spare as of today

PH in reverse is HP - a method of paying for goods that amortizes the costs over a period of weeks - in the long run , yes it works our more expensive, but in the short term it enables people to get what they need today, and pay for it in the future

advising people to get a RODI is safe ground for members of this site, same with Skimmers, same with Lighting so many users on this and every other site will take the moral high ground and up spec everything and know they wont be contradicted

problem is , for people who are not in the best of financial health, all these helpful advisory posts are a proverbial kick in the nads (UK term I believe but Im sure you will all get the meaning)

I dont need to use HP nowdays -
many people, I know, work with, still do - the economy is Shhh, cant tell you

thus my suggestion was given to enable Agent Jones to consider an alternative that may be more appealing to him

he may come back on and say - I have 130 bucks you daft cockney idiot
I just cant plumb one in as I dont have the facility at present

    Steve

PS - you can reply "Shut up Steve" and I will be fine with that LOL

HAHAHA I would never say that, and I did not take offense to your suggestion-I actually thought it was clever, as most of your advice here is. My point was that by the time you buy carbon, a bucket, a power head, it may be better to wait a little longer and save a little more to do it right. He has not even filled it yet. If there is one thing you need in this hobby right from the start, is patience. I live near Houston and visit San Antonio. I would not use water from the Edwards Aquifier in my reef tank. I would ask the water district for a report of everything in the water first.
