    Yes I read the instructions on it. It just gives me the range, but no chart to look at

    You don't need a color chart for hardness. If you are using API, add drop by drop until the solution turns blue to yellow. The number of drop is your dKh

    When it comes to cloudy water, there are only three possible culprits - excess nutrients, bacteria bloom and sand particles. You could try filter pads, water change and new carbon.

    I use API for ammonia and nitrites too... there is no range. Nitrites (in pariticular) are easy to read... though ammonia is a bit difficult (but this is just my POV, ;)). Still, if there is any chance you have .25 ammonia and/or nitrites, that would trump any other issue you are having and should be priority number 1.

    Well, I just changed the nasty filter and then did a water change as well.... we will see what everything looks like tomorrow

    It should be fine :) I just am surprised the filter was that dirty in less than a month
