Do you think my FOWLR tank will do ok with well water? I ask because I get mixed answers when I research elsewhere. I have had my water tested and everything is ok and had even taken a water sample to a trusted LFS and they told me it looked good. I obviously don't have any fish yet just want to be sure. Has any one here kept a successful tank with well water? I really don't want to buy a RO/DI unit unless I really have to. My LR is doing well and have a lot of activity on it, I'm hoping that is a good sign.

Depending on where you live, well water can have alot of minerals and compounds that are foreign and potentially dangerous to marine aquariums. I would definatly get an rodi. Or atleast buy rodi water from the Lfs.

There are other threads on here, I've read! I think you're running a huge risk! 1 you're prob gonna have alot of algae issues! 2 if it gets contaminated, it could kill everything! IMO a RODI unit is prob a good insurance policy for your tank and will help eliminate alot of cleaning!

+3 The problem with using well water is that there are things present which you and your LFS cannot test for such as metals, minerals, and organics. The possibility of you having a healthy system using it are very slim. Also I would definitely use some other form of filtration on the water before running it through an RODI if not you will be constanly changing the filters on it.

Too many variables in well water that I wouldn't chance. I would just use RO/DI. It's cheaper and good insurance instead of recovering from a crash or dealing with ongoing issues.

    In general no.
It depends on the well but usually if the water tastes fantastic its because of the high mineral content in the water which is probably not a good thing for your aquarium.

Start with RO/DI and add a good salt mix so you have the correct amounts of the correct minerals needed for the inhabitants to survive and thrive. Do it right the first time.

Thanks guys, I went out and purchased an RO unit. My friend who got me into this hobby uses well water in his tank and it is doing really well and he lives a street down from me. I on the other hand just didn't want to risk it.
