water softner bad??

    Hey guys so I was talking to a guy at my lfs and he was telling me that having a water softner connected to the water I am using is bad... any opinions on this guys??

    The manufacturers of RO/DI units recommend have a water softener installed upstream of their filter so that the membranes last longer.

    Yeah, bad for your LFS, since they won't be selling you as many replacement filters!

    If you have freshwater fish they recommend you buffer soft water to get some of the natural elements back.
    Most RO membrane manufacturers REQUIRE you to have softened water for any warranty claims to be valid. Soft water is the best thing you can do for a RO membrane, it is like pretreatment and does much of the work for it.

    For a saltwater system you get all the buffering you need from the salt mix.

    NO NO NO, I have a water softner on my old house and had a thriving reef! And that was a well too, no RO unit at the time. They are great!!!

    K that's what I thought when he was telling me that haha it wasn't really makin sense to me :D other than that they were extremely nice and I think I found my new fish store, oh and it wasn't the main guy that said it, it was a younger guy that was ringing me up
