I did a water top-off (only RO/DI) on my 120g this morning and the skimmer started to overflow. I've done many top-offs but this is the first time the skimmer goes nuts.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks.

Huum maybe you stirred up some sediment when you poured it into the sump or tank ? and or maybe time to check the quality of the make up water.. Fresh water should have no impact on a skimmer as its damn near impossible to skim fresh water anyways . Maybe the holding container for the R/O water was contaminated in some way ? Something was maybe spilled into it ? Thats about all the reasons I could think of that would effect a skimmer with a F/W top off.

    Nope.....no sediment was stirred up.
Water quality of the RO/DI is fine.
The RO/DI holding container is clean, nothing spilled into it and is always tightly covered.

Perhaps seeing that the skimmer is a "needle wheel venturi" type, could the pressure of the extra top-off water cause this to happen? Mind you it's never happened before.

I had to shut off the skimmer because I had to leave for work. I'll crank it up again tonight and keep an eye on it.

The LFS here has there RO/DI unit up close to the ceailing in a 500g plastic tank with an open top, you cant tell me thats pure water when they're could be bugs and dust all in that being so high up by the lights.

Maybe the skimmer is fouled and might need a cleaning I don't have any experience with a HOB type and who knows ? May have just been a freak once is a few yrs thing ?? I'd watch it next time to see how it does then maybe remove and clean it.. Was the tank feed just before the water addition ? I'd wait to see how it does next time.. If the water line was rally low and you brought it up with a few gallons like maybe 2 ? maybe that could have done it ..

When my HOB starts acting weird I'll take it out the sump and give it a good cleaning and that usually works.
