If going to use a previously Cu medicated tank for a reef, it is imperitive you make sure all copper is removed out of tank.

Will leach back in from tank sealants over a long period.

But you are going to have to invest in a good Cu test kit, and some kind of media that removes copper...and use over a couple of month period with water circulating in tank to insure all is out

    i.e.

    Poly-Filter

    Cuprisorb

I had a major Cu disaster at startup by using a cheap pond pump which contained internal brass fittings...

Cost me a small fortune in above products, not to mention months, to finally get it all out.

Would have been cheaper probably to start out with a new tank.

But tank will be great for a Fish Only tank till you get all the Cu pulled out of water column...and guarenteed not to have an ICK problem for first few months...

Hey, that does not sound like a bad idea to get your tank going!...;)

most LFS sell RO/Di water for around $0.50 a gallon it's well worth it to make sure you dont end up with a phosphate issue or something that's totally avoidable, tap water can make **** get ugly fast

Well, today me and me pop are going to home depot to grab a faucet diverter valve and we will hook it up. So far it looks pretty nice. Mine is six stages. 1st is sediment, 2nd is GAC, 3rd is cocunut block carbon, 4th is RO, 5th is DI, 6th is post DI Carbon. Lots of carbon :laughing0!

After talking with a few friends ( LFS, family friends) I refuse to put an RO filter in my tank. I'll just buy the dang water from the grocery store, my last 75 and 125 tank worked fine like that. Never had no problems, I let the water sit 24 hours and then add it in the morning.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions anyways.

the RO filter goes to your faucet and purifies water there, you can use that water for anything, drinking, making ice, whatever you want. Buying water from the store or LFS gets costly over time, as does those dechlorinaters. Ive been using tap since i started my tank, (I just got my RODI though) and had no probs, but i was dumping alot of money on dechlorinaters. Your call, but IMO i would eventually put money into it. You dont need to drop 100 bux noiw for one, but where i live, theres too much risk of copper in my pipes to take the risk.

Well, thats fine and dandy for all you other people who have problems with your tap water.

But here in Oregon, we have NOTHING. totally clean for me. Not saying I use it though...

For RO water at the store, 15-30 cents a gallon...

So no problem there, 2-3 gallon water changes every week.

    Easy.

My copper problem, or what i thought was a problem, is completely fine.

Thanks for your guys' concerns and suggestions! Awesome forum friends!

    1. I would never use a tank that had copper in it for my main tank. I would use it, however, for a hospital tank.

    2. Speaking from personal experience, I would never use tap water no matter how good you may think it is. There is a reason why they sell RO/DI systems. They work!

    3. In this hobby cutting corners is asking for trouble. Either you can afford the expenses associated with SW or you can't. No point in buying a Mercedes Benz if you can't afford a brake job every now and then.

    Just my two bits worth.

    Cheers!
