Look for either "reverse osmosis" water or "deionized water" on the drinking water shelf. I got tired of buying water and just bought my own RO/DI system off ebay for $130. It's 6 stage and I get 2ppm TDS output. Most LFS are not honest, and it's even worse now since they are just looking for fast sales to keep steady income.

    Yeah,

I know the guy personally, the only things I'd buy from him are inanimate! The store in Valpo had nice looking rock, but wanted $9.00 per pound. I decided to order from premium aquatics in Indy, Price 3.99 for premium Fiji cured and the shipping won't be 5.00 per pound.

That's what I'm doing here. Publix and SweetBay have Glacier RO machines. It's $1.75 for 5 gallons and I mix the saltwater here. It passes through a UV light, then carbon filter, then micron filter, then RO, then another UV, etc. I've noticed a drastic improvement over conditioned tap (less algae, phosphates are now under 1, etc.) I have a couple 5 gallon jugs I keep filled.

As soon as I buy a house, I'm buying a good RO/DI/UV setup from eBay...

I suggest a grocery store. That's what we use. Walmart to be exact. We just have 3 of the 3 gallon jugs, and buy more as we need it. You refill the jugs in the back of the store by the other drinks in this awesome machine thing. It's advertised as RO, DI, UV Steralized, Carbon filtered water, the company name is Culligan I believe. No problems from this yet! But for a large tank, it would definitely be an impractical way to go. For our purposes it is great until we can get our own RO unit.

OMG! I can't believe that they told you to use tap! Do you have a water store near you? Maybe they aren't that commmon but we happen to have two even though we live in a tiny town. It's great because they have dispensing machines outside so you can get water at any time.

If you can't get it cheaply at a local store I strongly suggest buying an RO/DI unit. It should cost you $200-$300 online and will pay for itself very quickly compared to the $1/gallon you will pay for RO water at the grocery store.
