Well I found RO water at my local Meijers, the Culligan dispenser, price not bad 29 cents per gal.

Thank you for all your help and suggestions.

while we're on the subject, anyone have opinions and/or experience on alternatives to RO? The one I am thinking of that is commonly suggested is just running water through activated carbon filters.

running water through carbon don't get rid of the heavy metals. I have heard of people using distilled but then again too much is removed. It is best to stick with ro.

My friend did that exact same thing except he bought all the distilled water they had off the store shelves at one time, He called the local grocery store up and they started putting them in boxes for him so when we got up there they were waiting for him at the service desk.
When we walked into the store he picked up a couple of bottles of Captain Morgan Rum and walked to the register to pay for the 60G of water and was asked what he was using it for....Joking around he said the rum was to strong and he uses it to water it down......had everyone laughing

Copper piping is often used in the distillation process. Since copper is toxic to invertebrates and there is no way to be sure if it is in your distilled water, IMO RO/DI is much safer.

I'm across the lake from you, my local water is loaded with phosphates and nitrates, it is near impossible to get this stuff out of your substrate and live rock once it is set in.

Anything I have found I could use at home (short of an RO/DI unit) still left way too much in my water.
