Hey guys... So I live in an apartment and my landlord already complains about how much water I use... I was going to buy a RODI unit and i realized how much water they waste... and I really dont wanna dump the money into a really expensive one so that it doesnt waste as much... SOOO.... is distilled water my next best option?

not that I would give a rat's behind about any landlord complaints outside of my breaking contract...

I'd still get RODI. Capture the waste water in a barrel and give it to your landlord for free. win-win. they can make use of it.

I have been using distilled water in my tank for the last couple months, while it is not ideal it is doable. My only complaint is that I feel I am throwing money away. Between the 3 gallon water changes and top offs, I am spending about $5 a week buying water.

I go to the local Culligan store and buy water from the them. After a while I started asking about the purity and they were kind enough to show me the results. I work for a local water department and took a sample to work and tested it, the results I got from them matched the results I got from my testing. The good thing is I pay $75 for 500 gallons. I pay .15 cents a gallon for a good quality RO/DI water. Maybe you could find a water store like that.

What size tank do you have and how many gallons to you anticipate making a month?
The waste sounds like a lot but really its not that big a deal. Say you are making 10 gallons a week or 50 gallons a month total. Add the 4:1 waste ratio and that means you would be using about 250 total gallons a month. You flush more than that down the toilet, sink and shower drain every day. While I am not a fan of wasting anything, water is a renewable resource and does not get wasted, its the same water that was here millions of years ago being recycled over and over. It gets treated and recharged in the ground or waters parks, or cools a nuclear plant, or goes into the rivers and streams etc.

Have your LFS test the conductivity or TDS before you buy, often, you may not be getting what you think you are.

Definitely check out your LFS for some RO/DI water. If that's too pricey, you can always go with RO water from the machines outside grocery stores. Usually runs around 30 cents a gallon.
