USB will only work up to about 15 foot. The only way it can work on a longer cable is to buy some Active Repeater Extension Cables. But they dont cost much. So it will still be cheaper to do it that way

I have regular CCTV Cameras mounted around the perimeter of my house with Coax cable running to my office where I keep a computer with a Security DVR Card. If a camera detects motion, all channels are recorded it is a pretty nice setup and I did it for pretty cheap too.

I paid about $100 bucks for the DVR card, it is a smaller one that only records 4 channels but you can add on to it later if needed. It has all kinds of features and it can send out email alerts, phone you, whatever. I bought the cable CHEAP!!!! And the cameras I bought some cheap IR Color Weatherproof cameras on Ebay for like $20 a pop. They work great, night vision is excellent but the color is a little off (reds look purple) but it is for security so i didn't really care about color but overall picture sharpness and quality which it is great for.

Overall, I spent about $200 (already had a computer) and that is a small price to pay to catch some jerk in the act if I am not home (if I am at home I have other security measure!) BTW. You can connect the DVR card up to a security system and it will sound the alarm. Or if the alarm goes off the cameras will record.

Yeah I was skeptical, as I always am but for $20 i figured I would buy one and try it out. When i tested it out i was quite surprised so I bought 3 more.
