Alright, I am here in Japan. I just purchased a 155L tank or roughly 40.9 gallon tank. It has a hole drilled in the bottom for the sump drain. I am currently looking for a sump that will fit in my tank stand. I have been looking around to buy some acrylic to make the size I need to take advantage of all the space in the stand.

Someone suggested that I don't do the sump at all for an aquarium that small. He suggested to get an in tank skimmer and that would be the end of it.

I have only been doing this since April of this year so my knowledge is extremely limited; is it feasible to run a skimmer only and no other form of filtration other than LS and LR?

    I would run a sump.

I ran a sump on a 10 gal before there is no size limit to run a sump. I would more water volume which means more room for flucuations in your params.

Go for the sump.... Too many benefits with a sump. My favorite benefit is keep your display clean of all that clunky equipment (skimmer, heater, Temp probes, etc). Also do your water changes with out splashi water all over the place. And dose your system with any additives. So go for the sump if you can.

I only have a skimmer, LR, LS, and a nice clean up crew as my filtration. All you need with fowlr or reef system.

But if your doing a fish only system you need more... Bio balls are common in use with a wet/dry filter. But I dont have much knowledge in that aspect. Sounds like you have LR and LS. So you should be good with a protein skimmer in addition to your LR and LS.

Hope you find value in this and it helps you out.

I believe the guy's reason for telling me not to run a sump was the addition of heat from the pump. Heat is an additional factor that I am currrently dealing with here on my current tank. Anyone know whether using an external versus an internal pump in the sump produces more or less heat?
