I was looking into my DIY HOB filter turned refugium with a flashlight to see if my copepods were still in there and not all in the DT and I noticed that the CC (about 2 inches and some funky old reef mud on top of that then some live rock small piece) has maroonish red stuff in it, but only mixed into the bottom 1 inch, I've never had cyano and wouldnt think that it would be below some levels in a refugium and none in my tank. I added the funky old reef mud a few days ago and think it may have something to do with it. I have another thread logging my experience with my coral and this product for the last few days, any suggestions would help. http://www.3reef.com/forums/refugium/f-o-r-m-funky-old-reef-mud-anyone-use-71916.html#post693185

Sounds like it could be cyano to me. The reef mud may have some nutrients in it that is feeding the bacteria in cyano. The reason you are only seeing it in your fuge could be differences in flow or lighting as compared to your main tank.

As long as its in your fuge and not your main tank, there really is nothing to worry about. If anything it contribute to absorbing excess nutrients out of the water column.

as long as its in ur fuge its ok ... beneficial in fact as stated above. just make sure to keep an eye on it so bits dont peal off and possibly start growing in the dt...

There is none on the surface of the substrate in the refugium, it looks as though all of it is in the lower part of the cc bed.
