    Hey guys,

I think I have witnessed one of the weirdest thing ever in mixing water for a saltwater tank.

Recently, I chose to start another saltwater tank, now in the passed I always used either AquaSafe or API StressCoat+ to remove chlorine, choloramines and ammonia from the tapwater.

This time, since I was out of both of those, I bought another thing, API StressCoat MARINE to remove the chlorine, chloramines, and ammonia.

My question is this, why is it that BOTH of my damsels, which are the hardiest fish, die after 4 days.... when all of my water parameters are within their boundaries? Has anyone used Stress Coat MARINE? Is this dangerous for Saltwater fish.... please help.

    Thank You!

you shouldnt have to mix any chemical removers to the water if you are using RO water.
i would assume the chemical would be the issue but im not certain.

quality water and saltmix is as simple as it gets. no need for chems

Are you saying you put the fish in the new tank within a day or so?

About 3 days after my tank was set-up. They are damsel fish and I have done this before many times without ANY issues, my LFS told me to even put it in 24hours after set-up.

Do you guys think the new STRESS COAT MARINE would make a difference, as I am using Tap water?

I am not a believer in doing that to jump start a cycle but since you are and have done it before I would say that this time the fish you got didn't take to that method and the stress killed them. There have been some at LFSs that told me to do it and said; "if they die in a day, oh well, they are only a few dollars just come back and get a couple more." I found that unethical.

+1 I agree totally. Im a hunter and have put down many animals in my life but killing an animal slowly is cruel IMPO. my son has a damsel in his tank that I hate but cant see just flushing it.

i agree with uncle here completly.

on another note, tap water is trouble in the long run. for the amount of money you will soon invest into this i wouldnt risk cheaping out on the water.

jsut my 2 cents dont take it personal

Well if it says marine then I'm sure it was made for marine tanks, would I use it, I don't think so. What you should do is invest in a ro/di unit jm2c

It's designed for marine situations, I would also assume the cycle killed the fish. I got some with my bluezooaquatics order (apparently it's part of their standard shipping package) and it didn't hurt anything I used it on. Just because they are hardy doesn't mean they're invincible. Also agreeing that it's a pretty rough way to die, there are other options for cycling, why not consider one of those? Save yourself some money and save some fish?
