I moved to south Brevard county in Florida from Orlando a couple of years ago. We now have well water versus city water. The well water does not stain concrete or smell bad.

Would someone tell me if I still need to use the RO/DI unit or what tests I need to run on the well water to know if I can use it without the RO? I do have the option of using the water directly from the well or that which goes through the water softner.

    Thanks

well water contains lots of trace elements, its always better to run a rodi unit so you know that you are starting with pure water.

Every well is different, no two are alike so people can only speak in generalities here. I much prefer RO/DI always for its consistency. You start with pure water from the beginning and use a good name brand salt mix and you don't have water related problems, at least from the source.

What concerns me most about domestic wells is the possibility of influence from nearby septic systems and leach fields, herbicide and pesticide contamination and leaking underground storage tanks such as gasoline and fuel oils. It doesn't take much and if the ground is porous contaminants can travel for miles horizontally as well as vertically. If you have recently purchased this property and did not get a full well and water quality report I would encourage you to do so ASAP. Labs around here in Phoenix start at about $150 for a domestic well scan. here is a link to some very good information on domestic wells you might want to browse through when you have some time. Its serious stuff.

Here is a link to a lab I use quite often for reference. I am sure you some local to you that offer the same services.

In the Florida area there are several RO and RO/DI vendors that should be familiar with your conditions, one I used quite a bit in the past is www.purelyH2o.com or even www.airwaterice.com .

Trace minerals are a good thing for drinking water but not necessarily for a reef. Its the other things that i would be concerned about though not minerals.
